The Great Galleries of European Palaces

This inventory database was created using data from the research programme “The Great Galleries of European palaces in the 17th and 18th centuries: Typology, History, Decor and Use”, directed by the Centre, and set up in partnership with the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome (Institut Max Planck).

Its aim is to list the most important galleries in the palaces of European monarchs in the period 1650-1850. More than just a typological record, every ID file is also analytical in that the data fields include geographical, chronological, architectural and interior decoration information as well. Each entry is accompanied both by images, and all sources used (printed, manuscript and iconographic) are noted.
