Abstract
There are many links between Marcel Proust and Versailles: many of his friends, in the world of arts and literature, lived there; he often went there; he knew Pierre de Nolhac, the Palace chief curator; he read many literary or historical works about Versailles. This investigation, conducted in association with the National Estate of Versailles, brings together curators and academics, in order to bring to life again this world of friendship and culture. An entire Belle Époque society, therefore, has to be reconstructed, through rare documents and archival articles, in order to rebuild these links, and to understand the role played by the symbolism of Versailles, sometimes visible, sometimes underlying, in developing the Recherche du temps perdu.
Professor of French literature at the université de Strasbourg, Luc Fraisse is a senior member of the Institut universitaire de France. He is currently working on an edition of the work for Classiques Garnier, where he is head of the “Bibliothèque proustienne” and the Revue d’études proustiennes.
